The Prologue of St John’s Gospel

St John 1: 1 - 5, 10 - 14, 16

1          In the beginning the Word already was.

The Word was in God’s presence,

2          and what God was, the Word was.

He was with God at the beginning,

3          and through him all things came to be;

without him no created thing came into being.

4          In him was life,

and that life was the light of mankind.

5          The light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness has never mastered it.

6          He was in the world;

but the world, though it owed its being to him,

did not recognize him.

7          He came to his own,

and his own people would not accept him.

8          But to all who did accept him,

to those who put their trust in him,

he gave the right to become children of God.

9          They were not born of human stock,

nor by the physical desire of a human father,

but of God.

10        So the Word became flesh;

he made his home among us.

11        We saw his glory,

such glory as befits the Father’s only Son,

full of grace and truth.

12        From his full store

we have all received grace upon grace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now,

and will be for ever.                                       Amen.

 7         Song of Praise

The song of our adoption                                            Ephesians 1: 3 - 6

1          Blessed be the God and Father

of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who has conferred on us in Christ

every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms.

2          Before the foundation of the world

he chose us in Christ to be his people,

to be without blemish in his sight,

to be full of love;

3          he predestined us to be adopted

as his children through Jesus Christ.

4          This was his will and pleasure

in order that the glory of his gracious gift,

so graciously conferred on us in his Beloved,

might redound to his praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now,

and will be for ever.                                       Amen.

10        Final Collect

God most holy,
we give you thanks
for bringing us out of the shadow of night
into the light of morning.
We ask you
for the joy of spending this day in your service,
so that, when evening comes,
we may once more give you thanks,
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God,

shed your light on those who watch for you.

May our lips always praise you,

our hearts bless you,

and our lives give you glory;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.              Amen.

11        Conclusion

God be in my head, and in my understanding;

God be in mine eyes, and in my looking;

God be in my mouth, and in my thinking;

God be at mine end, and at my departing.

Amen.

May God make our hearts firm,

so that we may stand before our God and Father

holy and faultless when our Lord Jesus comes

with all those who are his own.

Amen.
