Church of Scotland Scripture Sentences for Year B

There is a three year cycle of scripture sentences, as for the Lectionary. Year B started on 1 December 2002.

Nov 27-Dec 3 Advent 1

Awake sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon you. Ephesians 5:14

Dec 4-10 Advent 2

They will know that they have a prophet among them, whether they listen or whether in their rebelliousness they refuse to listen. Ezekiel 2:5

Dec 11-17 Advent 3

The Lord is good to those who look to him, to anyone who seeks him; it is good to wait in patience for deliverance by the Lord. Lamentations 3:25-26

Dec 18-24 Advent 4

"My soul tells out the greatness of the Lord, my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour." Luke 1:46b-47

Nativity Proper 1

The grace of God has dawned upon the world with healing for all mankind. Titus 2:11

Nativity Proper 2

God has caused his light to shine in our hearts, the light which is knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4: 6

Nativity Proper 3

The Word became flesh; he made is home among us, and we saw his glory, such glory as befits the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth. John 1: 14

Christmas 1

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

New Year's Day

In past times God spoke through the prophets; but in this final age he has spoken to us in his Son. Hebrews 1:1-2

Christmas 2

God the Lord has spoken and summoned the world from the rising of the sun to its setting. God shines out of Zion, perfect in beauty. Psalm 50: 1-2

Jan 6 Epiphany

On you the Lord shines and over you his glory will appear; nations will journey to your light and kings to your radiance. Isaiah 60: 2a-3

Jan 7-13 Epiphany 1

The Lord is strength to his people, a safe refuge for his anointed one. Save your people and bless those who belong to you, shepherd them and carry them for ever. Psalm 28: 8-9

Jan 14-20 Epiphany 2

Arise, shine, for your light has come; and over you the glory of the Lord has dawned. Isaiah 60: 1

Jan 21-27 Epiphany 3

The time has arrived: the kingdom of God is upon you. Repent, and believe the gospel. Mark 1: 15

Feb 2 Presentation

God, within your temple, we meditate on your steadfast love. Psalm 48: 9

Jan 28-Feb 3 Epiphany 4

Blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Matthew 5: 3

Feb 4-10 Epiphany 5

The Lord will give strength to his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace. Psalm 29: 11

Feb 11-17 Epiphany 6

The earth is filled with the Lord's unfailing love. Psalm 33: 5b

Last of Epiphany

God forbid that I should boast of anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world is crucified to me and I to the world! Galatians 6: 14

Ash Wednesday

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that everyone who has faith in him may not perish but have everlasting life. John 3: 16

Lent 1

God keeps faith and will not let you be tested beyond your powers. 1 Corinthians 10: 13

Lent 2

When Christ appears we shall be like him, because we shall se him as he is. 1 John  3: 2

Lent 3

The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent in his presence. Habakkuk 2: 20

Lent 4

Those who live on the level of the spiritual have the spiritual outlook, and that is life and peace. Romans 8: 6

Lent 5

Jesus died for all so that those who live should cease to live for themselves, and should live for him who for their sake died and was raised to life. 2 Corinthians 5: 15

Lent 6

Now is the hour of judgement for this work; now shall the prince of this world be driven out. And when I am lifted up from the earth I shall draw everyone unto myself. John 12: 31-32

Let us strive to know the Lord, whose coming is as sure as the sunrise. Hosea 6: 3

A great prophet has arisen among us. God has shown his care for his people. Luke 7: 16

Holy Week Thur

You desire faithfulness in the inmost being. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Psalm 51: 6-7

Good Friday

Is it nothing to you, you passers-by? If only you would look and see: is any agony like mine? Lamentations 1: 12

Saturday

Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains that and nothing more; but if it dies it bears a rich harvest. John 12: 24

Easter Vigil

He who possesses the Son of God possesses life. 1 John 5:12

Aug 21-27

Aug 28-Sep 3

Blessed are those whose hearts are pure; they shall see God. Matthew 5:8

Sep 4-10

Stand firm in the faith; be valiant, be strong. Let everything you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:13,14

Sep 11-17

Take strength from the grace of God which is ours in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:1

Sep 18-24

No place is left for any human pride in the presence of God. If any one must boast, let him boast of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:29,31

Sep 25-Oct 1

Sep 29 Michaelmas

Bless the Lord, you his angels, mighty in power, who do his bidding and obey his command. Psalm 103:20

Oct 2-8

Spare no effort to make fast with bonds of peace the unity which the Spirit gives. Ephesians 4:3

Oct 9-15

If we belong to Christ, it is all God's doing; it is God also who has set his seal upon us, and given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. 2  Corinthians 1:21,22

Oct 16-22

God will show us the path of life; in his presence is the fullness of joy, at his right hand and pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Oct 23-29

If I fixed my eyes on all your commandments, I should never be put to shame. Psalm 119:6

Nov 1 All Saints

You have come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of good men made perfect, and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant. Hebrews 12: 22,23,24

Oct 30-Nov 5

Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith, and to possess the kingdom he has promised to those who love him? James 2:5

Nov 6-12

The Lord is waiting to show you his favour. Happy are all who wait for him! Isaiah 30:18

Nov 11 Remembrance

Some boast of chariots and some of horses, but our boast is the name of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7

Nov 13-19

Look forward to the coming of the day of God, and work to hasten it on. 2 Peter 3:12

Nov 20-26

The Lord has established his throne for judgement. He it is who will judge the world with justice, who will try the cause of the peoples with equity. Psalm 9:7-8

Nov 30 St Andrew

Jesus said to Simon and Andrew, 'Come with me, and I will make you fishers of men'. Matthew 4;19

Christian Unity

How good and how pleasant it is to live together in unity! Psalm 133:1

Spring

The Lord has sent me to comfort all who mourn, to give them garlands instead of ashes. They will be called trees of righteousness, planted by the Lord for his adornment. Isaiah 61:1,2,3

Harvest

God cares for the earth and makes it fruitful. He crowns the year with his good gifts. Psalm 65:9,11

Dedication

My eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers which are made in this place. I have chosen and consecrated this house. 2  Chronicles 7:15-16
